Three New Pro Futura Scientia Fellows Received Their Diplomas during a Ceremony at SCAS

On Thursday, 17 September, a ceremony in honour of the three new Fellows of the Pro Futura Scientia
Programme was held in the Thunberg Lecture Hall at the Collegium. As announced in early June, the
three promising scholars were selected after a rigorous selection procedure in the tenth admittance round
of the programme since it was initiated by SCAS and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond in 1999.

At the ceremony, the new Pro Futura Scientia researchers - Renaud Gagné (Philology, University of
Cambridge), Joel Isaac (History, University of Cambridge) and Andreas Stokke (Philosophy, Umeå
University; nominated by Uppsala University) - were presented with diplomas by Professor Peter
Goddard (Professor and former Director, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. Fellow and former
Master, St. John’s College, University of Cambridge). They also gave short presentations of their research
to the invited audience. After a musical interlude, Peter Goddard concluded the ceremony with a lecture
on Houses of Refuge and Entertainment: The Development of Institutes for Advanced Study and Their
Role in Contemporary Academia
.

The invitation to nominate researchers for the next round, Pro Futura Scientia XI, will be circulated to
universities in Sweden and abroad during the autumn term.
